Here are some compost business abbreviations and terms that you’ll come across in industry publications:
BOD – Biological Oxygen Demand
COD – Chemical Oxygen Demand
Construction & Demolition (C&D) – waste from building construction, renovation, and demolition
contact water – rain that runs off the surface of the material
CNG = compressed natural gas
curing – period after initial processing in which the decomposition and humification processes are much slower; do not rush this part of the process; takes from one to four months
DBFO = design, build, finance, and operate
DBOOM = design, build, own, operate, and maintain
feedstock – ingredient in your compost mix, more here
FFV = fresh fruit and vegetable
FOG = fats, oil, and grease
FSE = food service establishments
HSAD = high solids anaerobic digester
leachate – liquid that seeps through the material, more here
LNG = liquified natural gas
MRF = materials recovery facility
MSW = Municipal Solid Waste, also referred to as comingled trash, this is what we throw out for the sanitation department to collect
OCC = old corrugated cardboard
PPB = paper and paperboard
PPP = public private partnership
putrescible waste – something that rots (regulations like to use this word)
RIN = renewable identification number (environmental credits)
RNG = renewable natural gas (upgraded biogas from an anaerobic digester or landfill)
RVO = renewable volume obligation
SMM = sustainable materials management (complete material life cycles)
SROG = sub-regional operating group
SSO = Source Separated Organics, organic material (food scraps, etc.) that is separate from other waste
tipping fee – the fee paid to dump waste at a landfill, composting facility, etc.
